Sandburg/DCS Natural Playground Update and UPCOMING EVENTS

This summer, generous volunteers and donors made fantastic progress toward completing the Sandburg Elementary / Discovery Community School Natural Playground that will serve as the schools’ outdoor play area for recess during construction this year.
A 100-year-old Douglas Fir stump was salvaged from a neighboring homesite, along with some large boulders from the existing school grounds. Several Sandburg/DCS families donated tree rounds, landscaping rocks, and a large dead cedar tree to be used for nature trail borders and features. And, wooden play chips were salvaged and relocated from the old playground, when it was demolished to make way for construction of the new school building.
In addition, a beautiful outdoor reading pod / classroom of granite boulders was created with the help of Cynthia Hudson, Maranakos, and Hendrikus Landscaping. And, on July 30th, volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Finn Hill organized a work party to weed, rake and remove blackberry roots in preparation for trail-building.
Although much progress has been made, volunteers are still needed to make sure that the Natural Playground is ready for use when school starts on September 6th. Here are some ways that you and your family can help:
• SUNDAY, AUGUST 28th, 10 AM to 3 PM — NATURAL PLAYGROUND WORK PARTY: All ages are welcome. We will be preparing trails and protective planting beds around tree roots and distributing salvaged play chips throughout the Natural Playground. Come for as long or short a time as you are able. Bring water and work gloves. If you have a wheelbarrow and extra tools to share, please bring them also. There will be a potluck lunch break at noon.
• FROM NOW UNTIL LABOR DAY — TRAIL-BUILDING CREWS NEEDED: Small crews of volunteers are needed to help build trail borders and features using donated natural furnishings. Dates and times are flexible. If you are able to help, please contact project leader Kathy Fries at 206-915-8533 for more details.
• FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16th, 10 AM TO 3 PM — MICROSOFT DAY OF CARING FINAL WORK PARTY FOR THE NATURAL PLAYGROUND: Volunteers will be planting protective ground cover and shrubs around tree clusters in the Natural Playground and performing general groundskeeping maintenance. Because work will be done on campus while students are present, all volunteers must have current approved-volunteer status with LWSD. Apply for or renew your LWSD Volunteer Approval here by September 1st to participate: http://www.lwsd.org/For-Community/Volunteers/Pages/Application-Process.aspx
• MONETARY & IN-KIND DONATIONS ARE WELCOME: Donations to help with the completion of the Sandburg/DCS Natural Playground can be made payable to “Carl Sandburg PTSA”. Please reference “Natural Playground” in the memo line. Donations to Carl Sandburg PTSA, a 501 (c)(3) organization, are tax-deductible to the extent allowable by law.
Thanks again to DCNA and the hundreds of volunteers and donors who have already provided such fantastic support to make sure that Sandburg/DCS students will have a wonderful, safe place to play outdoors and enjoy nature at recess when school starts.
