Finn Hill Neighborhood Meeting Wed., Jan 15

Finn Hill Neighborhood Meeting Wed., Jan 15

Dear Finn Hill neighbors and friends: Happy 2014 everybody! Best wishes for the new year. Hopefully, you’ve now recycled your tree and, perhaps, some of the presents that weren’t quite what you wanted from Santa. In any event, with the holidays behind us, you can look forward to a lot of activities on Finn Hill that should be of interest:

FHNA members’ meeting – “Visioning” the future of Kirkland and Finn Hill – Wednesday, January 15 at 7pm:  As you may know, Kirkland is starting the process for updating its Comprehensive Plan, which forms the framework for neighborhood plans. At our January 15 meeting, the Kirkland Planning Department will provide an overview of the planning process and engage us in an interactive exercise to define planning priorities for Kirkland as well as for Finn Hill. This will be a great way to learn about the planning process and to provide input early in that process – when it will be most influential. We’ll also provide a summary of the St. Edwards Seminary public hearing from the previous evening (see item below). Our members’ meeting will be held in the Cafeteria of Finn Hill Middle School, 8040 NE 132nd Street at the top of Finn Hill. Please come!

Public hearing on St. Edwards Seminary – Tuesday, January 14 at 6:30pm:  As we reported on the FHNA website, the Washington State Parks Departmentrecently received a proposal to rent a small portion of the St. Edwards Seminary building to a cybersecurity firm in the next couple of months, with a possible expansion to a long-term lease for most of the building in 2015. The proposal has just been withdrawn but the Parks Department plans to continue to hold a public hearing on the future of the seminary building  next Tuesday at the Northshore Utility District, 6830 N.E. 185th Street, Kenmore. If you use St. Edwards Park or just have an interest in traffic entering Juanita Drive from the park, this is an important hearing to attend.

Public hearing on Holmes Point Overlay zoning and solar panel screening regulations – Kirkland Planning Commission, Thursday, January 23 at 6:30pm: The Planning Commission is reviewing a variety of zoning amendments, including revisions to the Holmes Point Overlay zone (which protects natural vegetation and mature trees on Finn Hill properties west of Juanita Drive) and screening requirements for large solar panel arrays (an issue prompted by the installation of solar panels at the south end of Finn Hill). We’ll post more information about these topics, along with the address of the meeting venue, in the near future, but you may want to calendar this hearing date now.

Workshop on traffic alternatives for 100th Avenue – Monday, January 13 at 6pm: Kirkland’s traffic engineers are looking for ways to alleviate the congestion that builds up on 100th Avenue during rush hours. They’ve solicited views from citizens via an online survey and are holding a workshop on Monday evening at Juanita Elementary School, 9635 N.E. 132nd Street, at the corner of 100th Avenue and at the foot of what used to be known as Albertson’s Hill. More information is available online.

Hope to see you at some of these important meetings – particularly the one on the 15th!
