Sustainability Education Series – The popular City of Kirkland Sustainability Education Series aims to broaden what Kirkland residents already know about sustainability through a variety of classes, tours, and hands-on workshops. Design four seasons of delicious and sustainable veggie production for your garden. How can you make the most of the space you have? Learn how to choose the best location for your garden and how to decide which crops to plant. This class will also address important considerations such as crop rotation, succession planting, and the differences between cool and warm weather crops. This class will be part lecture, followed by an opportunity for students to practice building their own garden plan. You will also learn the importance of soil quality and Cedar Grove will help you understand the food recycling loop.

Backyard Composting 101

Learn how to make a hot compost pile using material from your own backyard! Weeds, leaves and veggie vines can all be put back on your landscape as compost. Learn how to set up a worm bin and construct a food digester to make compost from your kitchen and garden waste. Limited capacity. Registration is required. Only those who registered online will be allowed to attend the workshop. No walk-ins, substitutions, or wait-lists will be allowed. Each registered attendee who stays until the end of the workshop will have a chance to win one of the 15 backyard composting bins that will be raffled off. Please make sure that you have the capacity to take yours home after the workshop (size: 27″ diameter x 36″ height with 12 cubic feet capacity). We will not be able to hold any of the bins for a later pick up.
