Agenda for the Finn Hill Neighborhood Meeting June 25 at 7pm

Dear friends and neighbors: The Finn Hill Neighborhood Alliance cordially invites you to our general meeting next Wednesday, June 25, at 7pm in the Finn Hill Middle School Cafeteria (8040 NE 132nd Street). Please come – we’ll be focusing on a very “slippery” topic: Landslides and Mudslides.
  • We probably don’t have to worry about an Oso event (although something very much like that occurred here hundreds of years ago). But Finn Hill does have ravines with steep slopes and unstable soil, so our neighborhood is uniquely susceptible to erosion and slides, particularly when winter rains saturate the ground and scour our gullies.
  • We’ll hear from Kathy Troost, a UW geologist and professor, who made Seattle’s geological hazard map. She’ll tell us why we’re vulnerable, how we can spot erosion and slide risks, and what we can do to control those risks. Jenny Gaus, who oversees the City’s surface water management program, will also report on how Kirkland is changing the way it manages surface water.
  • We’ve organized a panel discussion with Kathy, Jenny, and Finn Hill resident Lou Berner, who is intimately familiar with runoff and drainage issues in our neighborhood.
  • We are looking for good questions to present to the panelists, so if you have inquiries please send them to us!
  • If this sounds like a City-sponsored meeting that the Kirkland Reporter featured in last week’s edition, that’s because this is that very meeting. The Reporter mistakenly thought that the June 25 event it wrote about was being organized by the City. No, it’s actually the focus of our FHNA members’ meeting.

We’ll round out the meeting with reports on some Finn Hill  traffic safety projects that the City is evaluating, the Finn Hill neighborhood plan that’s part the City’s comprehensive plan update, and the Friends of Big Finn Hill Park group that the County just formed.

It should be a great evening. We hope you’ll join us!
