Environmental and Adventure School Kids Transform 8K sq ft in Juanita Heights Park

Monday and Tuesday, June 9 and 10, the Environmental & Adventure School kids spent 5 hours in Juanita Heights Park on a community service project. They were removing blackberries and ivy.

The kids were in the park this past March working on removing invasives. At that time they learned how to construct an ivy raft so that bundles of  ivy would dry and die. The raft starts out in an area cleared of ivy, large branches make up the frame and coffee sacks from Green Kirkland are laid inside the frame. In the past, before we used burlap sacks, we piled twigs and branches to create a barrier between the ground and ivy bundles. The goal is not to have the ivy touch the ground and take root. You can see the raft piled high with ivy after the two day work party! Learn more about Juanita Heights Park.
