Amendments to Finn Hill tree ordinance – Important Planning Commission meeting on Thursday, April 27

The Kirkland Planning Commission will hold a study session on Thursday, April 27, to consider amendments to the Holmes Point Overlay ordinance – the special tree preservation ordinance that currently applies to Finn Hill properties located west of Juanita Drive. The Planning Commission meeting will start at 7pm in the City Council chamber of City Hall, 123 Fifth Avenue in downtown Kirkland. Earth Day at Juanita Heights Park

Under a sunny morning Earth Day sky, 37 volunteers cleared blackberries out of a 4,000 foot area in Juanita Heights park. We cut back the canes, piled them on rafts made from woody debris, then shoveled and picked our way beneath the root crowns. There it was, the earth, rising up beneath a drift of impenetrable blackberries.  Thanks to every volunteer who came out this morning to give back to the earth!

Holmes Point Overlay April 27 Meeting

Thursday, April 27 is the Kirkland Planning Commission meeting on Holmes Point Overlay ordinance. The Planning Commission will meet at City Hall to discuss amendments to the Holmes Point Overlay – an ordinance to protect trees west of Juanita Drive. FHNA and Holmes Point residents have been meeting informally for several months to discuss modifications to the ordinance. The HPO revision is part of ongoing work on the Finn Hill neighborhood plan. King County is planning a large work party in the Juanita Woodlands on June 3, 2017, volunteers are needed.  Open up the pdf to get all the information.  The Juanita Woodlands is a beloved park!  It is a portal of Douglas Fir, Madrona and Big Leaf Maple flanking Juanita Drive. Read the King5 2011 news story about how the Finn Hill neighbors fought off the sale of the woodlands to developers. The Juanita Woodlands’ Douglas Firs are susceptible to root rot and the Himalayan blackberries have a strong foothold choking out new tree growth....
